A counterbore hole is a type of drilled hole which is used for the purpose of countersinking. They are typically used in woodworking and metalworking to create a precise fit. A counterbore hole is usually made with an L-shaped drill bit, with the apex of the L in line with the edge of the workpiece. The tool is rotated about its axis during drilling, which keeps its cutting edge at right angles to the surface of the workpiece. This produces a smooth-sided counterbore, which can later be dressed flush using only moderate force.
