Trim Command in AutoCAD

 

Now in this video, we will see that how to use Trim command in AutoCAD.

While using the trim command, we need to remember that it will apply only there where two objects will be intersected, i.e., they should have an intersection point.

We will first select a trim command from our modify panel, and then select any one object, and after that, press Enter to select the whole object. We can easily trim any object from the whole by just hovering the mouse on it and clicking on it.

We cannot trim the single lines which are not intersecting with any other objects.

We will select the option of 'Fence,' which will create one dotted line, and from where ever this dotted line passes, it will all that objects.

Now we will look at another option, i.e., 'Crossing,' which will create one rectangle, and from wherever the lines of the rectangle pass, those objects will get trimmed.

If we want to delete any particular line from all objects together, we can use the 'Erase' option and select that line. For this, we do not need to go out of the command.

There are some times when you need to make quick decisions on whether or not to trim objects quickly in AutoCAD. The following are three cases where you should consider trimming objects quickly in AutoCAD:

  • If your object is within a negative space of another object, then it can be trimmed quickly.
  • If your object is overlapping with another object and the overlapping part is smaller than the other part, then it can be trimmed quickly.
  • If your object has a hole in the middle and the hole is smaller than what’s around it, then it can be trimmed quickly.

The TRIM and EXTEND commands are used to trim or extend an object. The TRIM command is used to cut the boundary of a closed polyline, polygon, or spline object. It is also used to cut objects from a block. The EXTEND command is used to stretch an object in any direction by a user-specified distance.

The steps to trim and copy objects within a boundary are as follows:

  • Select the desired object or objects
  • Click on the Home tab
  • Click on the Trim icon in the Clipboard group, which is in the upper right corner of the Ribbon
  • Draw a boundary around an object using your mouse, while holding down the left mouse button, to create a crop area for that object. You can also use your keyboard's arrow keys to move around within your image while drawing with your mouse

  • An object can be trimmed in many different ways. For example, if the object is a square, it can be trimmed to a rectangle. If the object is a rectangle, it can be trimmed to an equilateral triangle.
  • If the object is an equilateral triangle, it can be trimmed to a square.
  • If the object is an equilateral triangle or square that has been rotated 45 degrees, it can be trimmed to an octagon.
  • If the object is an equilateral triangle or square that has been rotated 45 degrees and then flipped upside down, it can be trimmed to a hexagon.
