How To Set Unit in Drawing in AutoCAD

In the last video we have seen that how to change workspace in AutoCAD, in this video now we will see that how to set unit and how to change units in AutoCAD in drawing.

First of all what is unit, units are a measurement system, in which we have two basic units, Empirical unit and Metric unit.

Empirical unit is old British unit system which is used in US now a days, which includes yards, feets, inches. While Metric is Standard unit system which uses kilometres, metres, centimetres, millimetres for measurements.

To set unit we can write 'unit' in our command section and then press enter, one dialogue box of drawing units will appear, we are given settings for Length and Angle.

In length we have different types such as, Fractional, Engineering, Decimal, Architectural, and Scientific. We will select Decimal as we want to work in centimetres and metres.

Below we can select which unit should be inserted for our content, we will select 'millimetres' and set it's precision from it's column as '0.0'.

We can select the standard of our unit also, we will select 'International'.

We are also given different types of angle, such as Decimal degrees, Deg/Min/Sec, Grads, Radians, Surveyor's Units. We will use Decimal degrees and set it's precision.

After setting all the unit options we can click 'Okay' and continue.

By these following steps we can set units in AutoCAD.

  • Open the “Options” window by going to “File” and then “Options”.
  • Go to the “Units” tab at the top of the window.
  • Change your desired units from inches (in) or millimeters (mm).
  • Click on “OK” and you are done!

  • The best way to set your drawing units is to set it to a unit that you are most comfortable with. The only thing that may be a problem is if you are working with someone who is using a different unit, then it may be hard for you to communicate your ideas.
  • The drawing units are the way you measure your drawing. They are usually set in millimeters, inches, picas, points, or pixels. Setting your drawing units is important because it determines how large or small your drawings will be when you print them.

The dimension units of a model in AutoCAD can be changed by using the Dimension Style Manager.

The Dimension Style Manager is a palette that is used to change the dimension units of a model in AutoCAD. It is located on the right side of the screen and can be accessed by clicking on it.

This palette has two tabs, one for setting up new styles and one for editing existing ones. The existing tab has four options:

  • New Style: This option will allow you to create a new style
  • Edit Style: This option will allow you to edit an existing style
  • Delete Style: This option will allow you to delete an existing style
  • Apply To Selection: This option will apply the edited or created style to all selected objects

  • This section will teach you how to make sure your dimensions are accurate. The first step is to determine the length of the object that you are measuring in millimeters or inches. Next, you need to measure the thickness in millimeters or inches. Finally, measure the depth of the object in millimeters or inches.
  • If your measurements are not accurate enough, you can use a ruler to measure and mark off each dimension on your object. Then use a protractor to find out how much is left over when calculating the dimensions of an object, or if it is too wide or too narrow for its depth and thickness.

A linear dimension is a measure of length that is used to measure the distance between two points. It is also known as a straight line. A radial dimension, on the other hand, is a measure of distance that is used to measure the distance from the center point of an object.

The difference between these two dimensions can be seen in this diagram:

  • In this diagram, you can see that the blue line represents a linear dimension while the green circle represents a radial dimension. The green circle has a radius of 10 centimeters while the blue line has a length of 20 centimeters.
