Simply select the real Xref in the drawing and hit delete to remove it. All imported layers in the Xref will remain visible and cannot be erased until you detach the Xref or save/close/re-open your design.
Make sure the folder containing the drawings is unzipped before proceeding. Place the xref files in the same directory as the DWG that is using them. Change the permissions on the location of the referenced files to allow full read/write access. If the files are stored on separate servers, combine them into one.
How to Find Xref Files
Options can be found in the Application menu or by typing OP.
Select the Project Files Search Path option from the Files menu, then click OK.
Click Add and either give your project a name or accept Project1 as the default.
The term "External Reference" ("Xref") refers to a document that you attach to a drawing in AutoCAD.
Hold down the Shift key while clicking Select to remove the highlighted records' entities from the selection. Opens the Select Objects box, which displays all objects in the scene and highlights those that relate to the currently highlighted XRef record. To choose XRef objects, use this dialogue.
