Simply find your material in this browser and drag and drop it onto the object you want to add it to. You can alternatively pick the object(s) first, then right-click on the material you wish to add from the Materials Browser and choose Assign to Selection from the context menu.
Switch to the 3D modelling workspace in AutoCAD, then type RMAT on the command line and push enter. As seen in image 1, a materials browser palette will appear. On the bottom left of this palette, click the "creates a new material in the document" button and select New Generic Material from the drop-down menu.
