The term "Internet Protocol address" refers to the location of a computer on the Internet. The Internet Protocol (IP) is a set of rules for sending email, streaming video, and connecting to a website via the internet. On the internet, an IP address is used to identify a network or device.

A unique combination of numbers and periods, such as, is an Internet protocol address (IP address). When a network equipment connects to the internet, this collection of digits serves as its identity.

An IP address is commonly expressed as four 8-bit fields separated by periods and written in decimal digits. Each byte of the IP address is represented by an 8-bit field. The dotted-decimal format is the most common way of encoding the bytes of an IP address.

Internet Protocol (IP) addresses are used to connect the Internet and your network. Static and dynamic IP addresses are the two types of IP addresses. This article compares the advantages and disadvantages of static and dynamic IP addresses so you can decide which one to use.

Your Internet service provider (ISP) assigns an IP address to your device. Your internet activity passes through your ISP, which uses your IP address to deliver it back to you. It is their responsibility to issue an IP address to your device because they are providing you with internet connection. Your IP address, on the other hand, may change.
