How to Update BIOS and Firmware?
In today's video we are going to learn further about upgradation of Firmware and how to set it up.
Upgrading Firmware is very risky process & it can totally damage the motherboard if that PC on which it is updating. So first thing is to learn the correct process & be completely aware about the steps which we should follow while updating like understand the capability of PC/Laptop and list down the System Model, Service number, Model number, Processor and other important things.
Now, once when we have downloaded the Firmware Update setup, we will open it & see the the System BIOS is completely opened & we'll also see the details like BIOS version, Service tag, Model number & etc... It will also mention the Current & New version with it's Payload name on the screen. Connect the power supply cord to the computer. Ensure that the power supply does not get disconnected during the BIOS update process. Also, before proceeding remember to close any open program and temporarily disable your antivirus software. Re-enable the antivirus software only after the installation is complete.
There will be one strict Warning given which states that :
"This utility will update the system BIOS and firmware. During the update procedure, your system will restart. Before you continue, close all open documents and exit all running applications. Do not interrupt this procedure or change the power source once it begins Interruption of the BIOS/ firmware update procedure will likely render your system unusable"
Updating BIOS and Firmware can take some time around 45 min or 1 hour, so untill then there should be no disturbance to that particular device & maybe time varies depending on what processor our device is comprised of.
So, as soon as we click on Update button the updation of BIOS and Firmware will get started & firstly it will load the Firmware data. After that it will ask to reboot the system to continue the update, so we'll do that & hence gradually our update will keep going & will be completed after certain time.
Now, to check whether the BIOS is accurately updated or not, we will go to start button and type 'msinfo32' and check for the BIOS Version/Date. From there we can see that our Firmware is successfully updated & version is changed.
Now, we will see the another method to install the BIOS update ie. Using Bootable USB stick.
So for that we will first go to Google and search for 'dddp download'. After that we will go to the dell's website shown in the search result and from there we'll download the Dell Diagnostic Deployment Package.
After downloading, we will run that DDDP graphical user interface and click on the Continue button & provide the location where it gets downloaded.
In the next step, we will follow the below mentioned path and go till there :
This PC > Local Disk (C:) > Dell > Drivers > R174621 > DIAGS
After reaching till the above folder we will only keep the below mentioned files and delete all other remaining ones :
- AUTOEXEC (Windows Batch File)
- COMMAND (MS-DOS Application)
- CONFIG.SYS (System file)
- DELLBIO (VLC media file)
- DELLRMK (VLC media file)
Also, we will now save the Firmware Update application file which we have downloaded here in the 'DIAGS' folder. After that we will open Diagnostic Distribution Package & then click on 'Install to a USB Flash Drive' option. We will need to select the USB Flash Drive ie. our pendrive & make sure that the pendrive is empty in there because all the data on the selected drive will get completely erased.
Hence, now we can easily update the BIOS using our pendrive with this second mentioned method.
