Hello friends.
Welcome to Learn Vern.
I am (name) I welcome you all to today’s video.
In the last video, we learned about a drawing tool which is a circle.
In today’s video, we will learn about one more tool which is polygon.
So let’s start with today’s video.
We will learn a few things about one more tool which is a polygon.
I will explain to you first.. what a polygon is.
Polygon will have more than 4 lines or have multiple lines, it can be 3 lines or 4 or 5 lines and up to 10 or more. So when I have multiple lines, it can be said as a polygon.
So let us learn a few basic requirements to draw a polygon and the options that are available to us with the polygon command, okay?...
So I will click here and select the command polygon. (pause 4 sec) As soon as I click on the polygon, in the command line I have to specify the number of sides that I want. Suppose I am taking 3 sides and press enter, then I have to specify the center point of the polygon, or I can select the edge as well. For that I have to type E. For edge, I have an option available here in the command line where E is in blue color so I can use it as a shortcut and type E and enter when I want to use an edge. If I already have an existing drawing available here and I want to draw a triangle with those edges, to prepare a triangle with those edges, I can use the edge command.
So let us have a look at it from the start. I am selecting a polygon here. One more thing I want to tell you is to use the polygon command, you can also type POL and Enter. POL is the shortcut key for polygon command.
Here we will draw 6-7 options for the polygon. First of all, we will draw a polygon that has 3 sides. So I will type 3 and enter. Here I have to specify the center point. I am not using edge right now but I had explained in which conditions we can use it. As we move further in our drawing we will also learn how to draw a polygon with the use of edges.
Now I will specify Center Point. I can click anywhere & that will be my center point. I will click here and that is my center point. Now if I want to use the polygon command, as you all might know we can use the polygon command only when we have a circle. So here there are 2 options available. The first is if I want to draw inside the circle and the second is to draw outside the circle. Okay? This way I will select here and I can easily draw a triangle, as you can see here my line can incline as well. If I want this line to be straight, I will select ortho mode for that. As I turn on the ortho mode, my triangle will be drawn either in this direction or this, which means it can be drawn only in 90°, 0°, 180°, and 270°. Alright? So here I am drawing and the command is completed. As soon as I end the command the pickbox and crosshair are available to me again but while I am already in any command, the pickbox disappears from the cursor such as if I click on line command or polyline or arc command then the pickbox is removed. When we are using any tools while our drawing, the pickbox will disappear and only the crosshair is available.
There is an opposite situation where if I select any element then for the selection only the pickbox is available and not the crosshair sign.
Suppose I want to use a dimension here that is linear dimension or I will select a quick dimension instead. So as I click on the quick dimension, here you can see the crosshair has disappeared and we can see the pickbox only for the lines we want to pick.
Come let us see this with a circle. (pause 10 sec) So this is a circle and I want a radius for it. when I click on the radius the crosshair is gone and only the pickbox is available here. In this way, you can differentiate between the pickbox and the crosshair.
At the end of this video, I will explain how to customize the pickbox and crosshair.
So come let's focus on polygon again.
As I select the polygon here I have to specify the sides and I am typing it as 4 and enter. Now I have to select a center and there are 2 options available again that I can use or simply press enter.
We can still draw a polygon easily if we do not have a circle or if we don’t select any option while clicking on the center that was available as if I want to draw it inside the circle or outside.
So here you can see.. I am drawing… a square.
Again I will click on the polygon and specify the sides as 5 and enter. I will click on a center point and press enter as we don’t have a circle available right now. Here we have the polygon...
Again POL enter which is a shortcut as I showed before, or how can I do it if I select polygon directly and this time we want 6 sides. Again I have to specify my center point and we don’t have a circle so I will just press enter. Here you can see I am easily able to draw. Okay.
Then again POL enter and we want 10 sides and enter. So here we have a polygon ready that has 10 sides.
In this way, we can use the polygon command.
So come let us learn the other options that are available to us with this command.
Suppose I don’t have a circle in my existing drawing, still, how can I draw a polygon? And if I have a circle for example here I have this circle available and we want to draw a polygon with this circle. Here I will draw one more circle as I will be teaching you 2 options here. So I have 2 circles here and I want to draw a polygon with reference to this circle. So come let's see.
First of all, I will select Polygon, then I have to select a center point for the polygon which is the same exact center point of the circle. But before that, we have to select the sides of the polygon as per our requirement. Suppose I select 5 sides and enter, then I have to specify the center point. As I move the cursor around the center point of the circle, here it shows me the center point of the circle and I have to select this center point for my polygon as well. Now, as soon as I click here there are 2 options available, inscribed in circle and circumscribed about circle. This means that in the first option when I drag or the reference that I will use to draw a polygon will be the corner. With the second option, when I draw a polygon, the reference line or point will be the midpoint which is the side of the polygon.
So let’s look at both options one by one.
First of all, I will select inscribed in circle…okay? As soon as I start drawing here the reference or pick point that I have of the polygon is the corner. So here I am drawing and clicking on track. We learned all about tracking in the previous videos. So with tracking, I can see the junctions and when I click on the cross mark, here my polygon is formed. Alright? So this polygon is ready with the first option. With this option when I draw a polygon the reference will be the corner.
Let's see the 2nd option now. So I will again select polygon and again specify the sides as 5, then again I have to specify the center, so I will select the center of the circle as the center of the polygon and I will select the second option here that is circumscribed about circle. In this, when I draw a polygon, I will not have any edge or corner as a reference but a midpoint which is one of the sides of the polygon, and by dragging the midpoint I can easily draw a polygon here…okay?
So these are 2 different ways to draw a polygon and use the tracking line to draw it.
One more thing we will learn, such as we select polygon here and I want 5 sides in it so 5 and enter. Then I have to select the center so here I am selecting the center and then I will choose the 1st option here where the tracking or reference of the polygon will be the corner or the polygon should be drawn inside the circle. So I will select the first one here.
Then I want to draw a circle here and to draw the circle we need a radius, so we take the radius as 1 and enter. As we can see here we have the polygon ready. In this polygon, if I join all the corners and form a circle then the radius of that circle will be 1.
Come let's have a look. So here I am selecting the circle command and I will select the midpoint first but as the midpoint is not visible, I can simply turn it ON from here and click on geometric center. As you can see we are now able to see the center and that will be our center of the circle. so I have selected the center and now I have to insert the radius that I gave as 1, so 1 and enter. As you can see, the circle that we have here is exactly touching the corners. Okay.
Now the second option. Suppose again I select the polygon command and here I have to specify the sides again, so I am taking it as 5 sides again. Once again I have to specify the center point that I want. So I am taking the center point as this point. But now I will choose the second option here that is circumscribed about circle. As soon as I select that, here it will ask me once again if I want any specific radius. Now if I enter any radius here then the circle that will be formed will be outside the polygon which means if I give the radius here as 1, if I draw a circle here with 1 radius then the circle that is formed will be exactly inside the polygon.
Let's have a look. Here I will type the radius as 1 and enter. So the polygon that is formed here will exactly give me a circle whose radius is 1 and it will form a tangent. Okay.
So the 2 options that I had here, so I will select polygon, 5, enter. Click, enter. The options that I had available were if I want to draw a polygon outside the circle or inside the circle, I can set it from here as well.
So as per the requirement of my drawing, if I have a specific radius then you can draw it as I mentioned before. If I have an existing drawing and if I want to make a polygon just by tracking it, I have to keep in mind that the center of the polygon and the existing drawing can be set as per my requirement.
After that to track, I can use 2 options. Either I can track with edge or with the midpoint of its side also I can track.
So today we learned how we can draw a polygon and what are the commands that are available to us with polygon, the shortcut key for a polygon. We also practiced the options that are available here.
I hope that you all have a clear idea now on how to work with a polygon.
