Computers, networks, and other IT systems produce audit trail records or logs, which are records that document system activity. Organizations employ log analysis to assist mitigate a number of hazards and meet compliance rules by evaluating these records.

Log files are vital for digital forensics because they contain information about the ability of a computer to communicate with other devices, such as smartphones or tablets. In addition, they provide a means to recover data and provide insight into how a system is used.

There are many advantages of log interpretation and these include:

  • Easily interpret an incomplete event.
  • With our current state, we cannot interpret all events that happen in the world. We can only interpret those events that are part of the company’s business plan, such as financial statements, or those events that have already happened (e.g., purchase orders).
  • We could not rely on information from other sources to understand the entire environment; we would instead have to rely on our own data (impressions) and confirmed information from other sources (e-mails).
  • When people behave differently after reading a piece of text rather than after looking at it, it is a form of entrainment or learning - normally in the sense of acquiring new skills
