Font Theory in CorelDRAW

In the last lecture, we learnt these topics i.e. Pen tool, drop shadow and transparency.

Now, our next topic is fonts. So, what is the importance of fonts in designing or in the work of a designer? What is an important role of a font?

Lots of people think that fonts are normally a different type of word format, if we use creative fonts then we are able to create good designs. OK!

But fonts play a very important role like there is any design which has content, as you can read here “Graphic designers use typography to adjust the text whiting the design. This helps in creating content with a purpose.” We use fonts with specific purpose, it is not like every creative font will go with any design, there is a purpose behind choosing any font.

Designers must understand the ideology or terminology of the font. Because whenever you create any design, you must be aware which font should be used and the same is suitable for which field, stream or brand.

It is very much important that, What we want to convey through that design and font. Font is also a part of design. That is a design itself.

Because there are lots of designers, who design fonts only. OK!

We will later understand how to design with fonts.

 Here, it is also written that “because of such design with unique typography ideas, a brand can communicate with its audience in an effective way.”

Typography helps us to convey or execute any idea. Logos are also created through typography.

Logos are the base of typography. There are many types of logos, which we will learn later on. Typography logo is one of them.

Brand Communication!

Every brand has their own different way or unique medium to communicate. And gradually you put the brand in front of customers, the font plays an important role in that.

Because, for understanding, take example of PUMA, NIKE, all these brands have their specific fonts. Adidas also has their own font style. If you change the font style, it will look duplicate or the first copy. OK! And because of that, fonts play a big role in brand communication.

To highlight any brand, we choose a specific font. And always there is a story behind the selection of fonts. OK! There are reasons behind that. Hence, they work a lot on fonts.

Further, it is written that “its audience in an effective way. Typography allows designers to create visuals for brands”.

Typography is such a thing, which allows designers to create any brand. As I earlier showed you, there are lots of brands like Nike and Adidas, which are based on fonts. Because of the font we are able to identify and recognize that it is the same brand. It creates an image in our mind that this font belongs to this specific brand. OK! This font is used by only this brand. OK! It also establishes a trust in the mind of customers. So we should not break their trust and use fonts very thoughtfully. It is not only about creative looks. OK!

There are some fonts, which are simple but look very rich and royal. OK! Looks very sophisticated also.

Further we see Typography. We talked about fonts and their role.

Now, Let’s see the role of typography.

“At the basic level, typography is the area that involves arranging a typeface in various combinations of font, size and spacing.”

It gives the understanding of typography. This is a basic level of typography that involves various fonts or combinations of two fonts and that creates anything which looks very attractive in reading.

If anything is written simply then I won't look attractive in reading. To make this attractive, what do we do? We combine two good fonts. Which thing we wanted to highlight, we can keep it in bold font and those things which are for normal reading, that we will keep in normal font. It is all about combinations of font size, spacing and color. OK!

“In this way, a wide range of designs including website design, brochure design, print design, books and computer graphics, etc.” Typography is used in many places like brochures involving lots of typography which help us to provide information to our client. Print design also involves lots of typography, as you have seen lots of posters, hoardings on crossroads which are made by typography. In books also, lots of typography designing is used.

Compute graphics, like any wallpaper where you will find lots of designs in which only typist is written but it looks very good.

“Depends on the skillful use of typography for making an impact”

Which kind of font you use, that is also a skill and talent. Choosing a font is also a creativity. There are millions of fonts available on the internet and you can even create your own fonts. That we will understand further. But out of these millions of fonts, which font is suitable for your brand and choosing that is also a skill. This is a part of typography, which you have to understand. You learn designing gradually by doing practice.

If you want to learn proper designing, then every designer must be aware about type phase in 2021. Because designer level is judged by typography. Typography is very much important.

Everyone heard that content is king, if any content writer has provided any content to us then we have to implement that content in the design in a very well manner, so for that we need good font selection.

Once we selected the font then we need typography. We selected two or three fonts then we had to set typography of any two fonts. Typography involves lots of things like size, color, spacing. OK!

 So, it is very much important how we make content look like a king in that design. It does not matter how good the content is if it is not presented in a good manner in typography. OK!

So there are two sides, our content should be good as well as the typography then only our design will look great. Then only design will hit.

So understanding typography is very much important.

Now, we will understand how typography and fonts are useful for designers.

“Graphic designers use typography to adjust the text within the design.”

For Graphic Designer typography is such a tool, which helps them to convey any text, paragraph. Just like any offer, there is a 20% discount on clothes with terms and conditions, so how can we highlight the offer and how can we make 20% creative. Just like only 20% off, only writing this will not be sufficient for our purpose.

How should we convey terms and conditions, how to show 20% off, for that typography is very much important.

“This helps in creating content with a purpose.” OK!

There is always a purpose to create any content and typography & fonts help to execute the same purpose.

“The planned use of typefaces allows the designers to make a design look aesthetic and pleasing.”

Designers must understand the type faces. This is a very unique thing but I will illustrate it to you in a different way.

If any designer uses any font but their look and placing is not good enough or not able to convey then there is no value of that font. OK! We have to understand the value of the font and also the look of the font.

Just like, you choose any font! Like if you have a client or doing a job somewhere and that company works for kids like for kids clothing or kids education, then if you select very simple fonts. OK! Then what happens, the simple fonts are never convenient for kids. For them, you have to select stylish fonts or curvy fonts which are known as calligraphy. But calligraphy should be readable enough and should be very much clear. Readability of the same should not be killed.

We can take very simple, professional or corporate fonts for kids. You have to understand this. Only a good look is not enough, it must be pleasing and satisfy our purpose.

Like we selected the font but that font will go with which field, brand and design, that understanding is very much important.

This was a use for all the designers!

Font and typography has some important points, which must be taken care of by Graphic Designer. OK!

First, size is very much important. Just like an example, if you have written any quote or phrase in English and you have to highlight that. Like I said Content is king. So the king is very important to us. We have to show the content to look like a king. So here, we will make the king a little bit bigger and bold and will keep content normal. So understanding these things are very important. Length of size is very much important in the design which becomes part of layout. We will understand this later.

Next thing is color. Color of the font is very important. Just like if we are working for any brand and that brand has any logo, so that we have to take the font color according to the color of the logo. OK!

Because flow with a theme is very much important. If logo color is in red and white and we select font color in blue then it won't be suitable and convenient at all.

So, what we have to do, whichever color we choose, should be according to our design. OK!

Because, if we create anything, then the logo will be already there. Then only we can come to the front. Font is the second priority. OK!

So, whenever we use font color then we have to go according to themes. We can not go out of theme. OK!

But if you want to go out of theme then we have to change the whole theme, that is a part of designing, that we will understand later.

But Colors are very important.

After that, Alignment!

In any design, font alignment is very much important. We have to align that with any objects. We can not leave anything without aligning. So aligning is very much important for any font.

After that, Contrast!

As I already mentioned to you that “Content is King”. If we take this example, then in that KING, we want to match contrast or highlight any color then we will highlight in KING only and will keep content normal.

Just like, there is a theme of white and red, there we can make content black. OK! That’s not our theme but we can make it black and KING in red.

So like this, we can create a normal theme and contrast will also set.

Second point is “ they have a certain brand message to convey to a target audience, which compels the designers to use typefaces creatively.”

Any certain brand! OK! That’s always convey a message with the help of fonts for their target audience. OK! So there, they have to choose typeface perfectly and convey in creative manner and execute their ideas is very much important.

As we have seen earlier by taking kids' brand examples. We can not take corporate fonts in KIDS brands.

For another example, we take CA firm and we have to design for that. There we can not use calligraphy font or artistic font, because that is a professional firm. OK! CA is a professional firm. We will choose simple and sophisticated fonts only. OK! Likewise, all designers have various font collections according to their client and audience. OK!

These were the important points, size, color, alignment and contrast. We have to bifurcate all the clients by different fonts.

Types of Fonts!

There are two types of fonts i.e. Serif and Sans serif.

OK!

Serif and sans serif are basic types of fonts, which make typography easier.

Let’s understand the serif fonts and sans serif fonts.

This is a serif font.

For an example, you heard the font name, Times New Roman. Everyone must have heard this name, Times New roman. OK!

In the Times of India newspaper, the title is Serif font. This is just a type of serif font, there are lots of fonts available in serif.

Now, as you can see, some curves are here at the end of the letter and extended part of the letter. These all are serif fonts.

Now, these are Sans Serif fonts, which do not have any curve or extended area rather they have direct cut. OK!

For an example, everyone heard Arial, Calibri, these both fonts are Sans Serif font. As you can see this carefully, you will not find any curve. You will find direct cuts. OK!

I will teach you a trick to remember both of them.

Serif font, which you don’t need to remember.

How can you remember the Sans Serif font? Sans is a Sanskrit word. Sans means “TO CUT”. OK! Sans Serif!

Remember Sans, this is a Sanskrit work. Sans means “To CUT”.

Those fonts do not have curves, that’s called Sans Serif font.

And those fonts have been extended, called Serif font. OK!

 This was about fonts.

For example, you can see “Nothing great ever came that easy”. How is it represented; you can see that?

In this, total one, two, three and four. Four kinds of fonts are used in this. OK! To give a good look, they applied patches on the top and bottom. In colors, they only used two colors. We are not counting the background color now.

As you can see here, lots of things are represented in different ways. “Success is a state of mind” and “Always believe in yourself”. Lots of things can be conveyed in a different way through fonts. This is called typography. We can use typography at many places. Just like any brand or company tagline, we want to convey in typography, so by using two or three fonts and patches and by adding designs, we can present in a better manner.

After that, you can use this example, only bold fonts are used in this and try to give a 3D effect with extended shadow and used colors in shadow. It also looks very attractive. Like this, we can play with fonts and make designs attractive.

“Design is creative thinking”. OK! This is called the glitch effect, lots of you must have heard this. Whoever the designer of this, he played with fonts and colors here. Also used outlines and patches to make this more creative. OK!

If you have to write any motivational quotes, lots of people create this kind of wallpaper through painting. Otherwise, download photos from the net or use their own photography. If you want to put any good quote on a photo then you can present it like this and you can also connect that photo with fonts as well.

Here is written, “Say Yes to New Adventure ''. So like this, this is a photo of adventure so it should go with an adventure quote and as you can see that the tagline of adventure or adventure word is looking creative with curvy font. Serious font is not used here, it is a normal font but looking very attractive.

As you can see here, it is a matter of any IT company. Their strategies and services are shown here. How did they present their services? They played with colors and sizes here. There are lots of things, like development, market environment, mobile, media, social content, developers, cyber solutions etc. They played with lots of words and looked very attractive.

Another thing, gradually you start learning, you will understand which font requires adjustments. Spacing also plays a big role here. You can see that all the spacing here is also in a very proper manner. No fonts are overlapped or clumsy. There are also many small fonts but you can see how they managed the spacing. How they managed the colors.

See this design carefully, not a single color is looking bright. There is orange color and along with that there is sea blue color but the contrast or shade of both is considered very similar. No color is downgraded and no color is highlighted.

This is also a very important matter in typography.

Earlier, we learnt four points i.e. size, color, contrast and spacing. All of these are very much important. Spacing is also here and size is also here. All the words which need to be highlighted, like app development, analytics, market, software and engineering, all of them kept in bigger size. That’s how size matters. You can see colors as well. You can see spacing as well. How did they manage that?

Now, we learn how to download any fonts?

I will show you practically but you should note these two websites, here you will get good and very creative fonts. I will show their specialty as well.

Dafonts and 1001 fonts. Here you will get free fonts. Chargeable fonts are not here. You can download, use and install any font from here. You will not get an issue of copyright.

Let’s see how we can download any font and how we can install the same in our PC and how to use that.

You have to search in your browser, DAFONTS and the first website is the correct one. You will find this kind of outlook or interface of dafonts. Here you will get many options.

Here, you will get basic Sans Serif, serif, fixed width, various and many more types are available here. Like this, you can download fonts as per your requirement. Or you can search out also.

Like you need for kids, then you can download calligraphy fonts. If you like “billion dreams”, then click on download. Downloading will start but this downloaded file will be in zip file format. Show in the folder and we will copy paste it in any folder. Like that! And We can directly install it by clicking on it. Or extract a file then there is a folder and you will find this kind of symbol. OK! White color symbol, you have to click on that item and you will find install on top of that. Like this you can install this.

If you have too many fonts like this in your folder, (right now I just copied it) ok! You have downloaded all of them and you want to install all of them in one go then you select only fonts and right click then install for all users. Like this way.

You installed the font, let’s see in CorelDraw.

We selected a text tool and wrote “Graphic Design”. Our font name is “Billion Dreams”. Now you can see that, till now we don’t have that kind of font. But now we have that font. So like this you can download and use the fonts. In this way you can make typography, here you will get many options.

Another website which I mentioned earlier, there is a benefit in that. I will show you that. Like, you have to see the examples, you may download this font but if you have to save the time. Because after downloading, you have to extract it and then you have to install it and then after you are able to see it. But it will look different there. Like here, it will look good but suppose you have to write any name or design but you will not find “designing” written font here. OK! But here you like the font but when you write “designing” then it looks weird. So better, you check it here only, how it will look when you write your content.

So you have to type “designing” here. So you can see it all showing “designing”. So, from here you will get how these fonts will look in actuality. You can search out in all different ways. You will get the understanding and you can judge the font that if I write this then I will get this kind of look in this font.

This is the biggest point. You can use a website of 1001 fonts and dafonts, whichever is convenient for you.

Here also, Sans Serif, script, calligraphy, narrow, handwriting text, display, headline etc. all options are available here.
