Hello Friends! Welcome to Learnvern!
In the last lecture, What did we learn? First thing we learnt about layouting then we understood the visual balancing.
Today we are going to learn very important things and that is CorelDRAW logo designing.
Lots of people must have heard about logo designing and lots of you already know what CorelDRAW logo designing is.
Today we're going to learn this in depth because lots of people have little knowledge about this.
People do not have an idea about how to create logo in CorelDRAW and what is their importance in the market for any company or organization.
First thing, When you wake up in morning, which thing you do first.
First thing you pick up your mobile.
On the back of the mobile you will find a logo or brand name of the company which manufactured that mobile.
We see these two things in the morning. Means when you open your eyes, you see a logo.
After that we go for a brush and then we pick our toothpaste.
there is a brand and name on that toothpaste, that is also a logo.
After that, we go for clothing and pick any t-shirt or trouser, you will find a brand name on that. That is also the logo.
Logos represent the organization which made the product.
OK! The logo is everywhere. There are lots of importance of logos.
Logo is at Brandmark and the logo is such a thing which represents the value of the product.
It also shows how famous the product is and what is their use.
Logos provide all the details related to the product.
That’s why the logo is very important.
What is a logo? Normally you'll find the definition of a logo.
“A good logo is a symbol made up of text and images that identifies a business.
Logos identify the business and also provide the information about their work, services, Product and their current Value in the market. We can define all of these things from a logo or we can judge these things from a logo.
“a good logo shows what a company does and what the brand values.”
A good logo is an asset of the company Because logo represents the value of the organization.
the logo is a perfect visual brand for us. Logos may be in the shape of symbols or text.
Let's go further, “a logo identifies key information about your business.” A logo from its tagline or slogan can describe the whole business.
It is said that a book can be written on the logo.
Logos convey everything to their customer, market or client.
“A logo builds brand recognition.”
Logo helps in brand recognition it is also a mirror of brand.
As we already recognized some logos, when we see that logo, we know what their company name is and what we will get here.
For example, see the world McDonald's, you instantly recognize what you will get here. OK! We don't need to research it.
when you see this color and this M, these both things become such a great brand that when you see this, everything will pop up in your mind.
you don't need to research about it and you don't have to think about anything.
And also you don't need to ask anyone about this?
even children know what this is!
Take the example of Nike.
When we see the logo of Nike, shoes come instantly in our mind.
That logo became very famous.
We think that they did not do any hard work to become famous.
If you see the logo of Macdonald, this is a basic logo. If I look at the CorelDraw language, what did he specialize in? Only they took the rectangle in curvy shape and inserted M inside that rectangle.
The thought process of the designer behind this logo, those things are very in depth.
From this one rectangle and M in red and yellow, how they are doing marketing with these simple things, to know that thing is very much important.
How much time you devoted to making a logo or how much hard work you do to make a logo is not an important aspect of any logo.
Vision & Mission behind the logo is very much important, not only the logo is important.
There are some logos, which are very simple.
For an example see the logo of Nike, there is the right mark only, nothing is written here.
No design is there but behind this logo, designers must have a thought process and mission & vision and because of this, this logo becomes a brand.
Logos are very much important and it does not convert in brand within a night.
It required lots of hard work and a good amount of time.
Designer and their marketing team plus the product altogether do hard work to create a logo.
Logos with a simple symbol cover all the market.
When you see the right mark of Nike, you don't need to think so much or Google it to know what the product is.
you have already understood that it is a symbol of Nike and we will get shoes, track pants and other accessories here.
See the logo of Instagram.
There's nothing but just a symbol of the camera.
To create this logo in coreldraw, not a big thing for us.
You already learnt that so you knew that if you have to create these three logos in CorelDraw then how much it will take.
Only a rectangle is there and we can get the right mark from anywhere or we can sketch and redraw as we did in Pen Tool.
We have to learn the thought process behind this logo.
We don't just need to design a logo, rather we have to understand the story behind the logo, type behind the logo and vision & mission behind the logo.
We don’t have to work like tool operators.
Designers always create things.
We always value our vision and mission.
Vision which we create for any brand so that we will get the value. So always focus on creation.
Ok!
As you can see this is a logo of Instagram.
It is a very simple logo. There is a round and a curvy rectangle and they increase their thickness.
Otherwise, they took two rectangles and trimmed it and also included a circle and ball. Color of this logo is gradient.
OK!
You understand these many things.
But we will understand next the mission and vision behind these logos.
So we will get to know how many types of logos there are, how many ways there are to create a logo, and how many ideas we can incorporate in logos.
Types of logo!
the first type is monogram logos.
Wordmarks,
pictorial marks,
abstract logo,
mascots,
the combination mark,
the emblem
These many types of logos are there.
This is just a basic type, but they have a very deep concept.
We will understand the basics only, so that we will learn from the basics step by step.
There are some examples of Pepsi, apple, Fedex, amazon, We love logistics, adidas and MacDonald’s.
These many types of logos are there.
As you can see, there is a Pepsi logo and it has a symbol on the left.
There is an apple logo but nothing is written there.
There is the logo of Shell, there is also an icon.
There is no icon in the Fedex logo, only red and white fonts are there. Amazon is written there and there is only a simple mark.
Adidas is written there with three pillars.
There must be a story behind these all logos as they created this all.
Let's see the types of logos and how to create that.
Monogram logos! Monogram logos are typography based on logos, they recognize their patterns.
This logo is created with fonts only and it involves some pattern. OK!
Just like “IBM” or “HBO”, these are examples of Monogram logos.
They did not do any creative thing, they only selected unique fonts and created a logo based on that.
Those things become a brand. As you know “IBM” & “HBO”.
Sometimes logos are created from brand initials.
That’s why it is called latermarks logo as well and it represents their organization too.
After that another type is a wordmark logo.
Wordmarks logo is similar to lettermark.
It is related to monogramming. “Wordmark or logotype is a font based logo that focuses on a business name alone”.
That focuses mostly on business names.
As we discussed in monogram or lettermark, that focus mainly on initials and brand name.
For an example you take VISA and COCA COLA.
The Coca Cola logo is very famous and there is nothing special in that logo.
It is simply a letter type. But their font is very much unique.
“Wordmark logos work really well when a company has a short and different name.”
It works very well when a company has a short and unique name.
Because there is no need for an icon, we work only on typography.
If it has a short name then we can set it in typography easily and if it has a unique name then we can do creativity in that.
“Google's logo is a great example of this.”
Google logo is one of the best examples of wordmark logos.
“The name itself is catchy and memorable so, when combined with strong typography, the logo helps create a strong brand recognition.”
Google logo is very much famous, even children recognize this logo.
Even illiterate people know that this is the logo of Google, Because this is a very memorable and famous logo.
There is nothing special in this, only Google is written in five different colors.
Their fonts or letters are decorated in different colors.
Google and Coca Cola are the best examples for wordmarks logos.
Only thing that matters is that the name should be short and unique so that we can set typography very well.
After it comes “Pictorial marks”.
“A pictorial mark (sometimes called brand mark or logo symbol) is an icon”
For example, you can understand from this image what “pictorial marks” are and you can also understand what kind of logo this is.
In pictorial marks, it is just a symbol or drawing of a picture, and because of that it is recognized as a brand.
If you understand theoretically, “A pictorial mark (sometimes called brand mark or logo symbol) is an icon – or graphic based logo. it is probably the image that comes to mind when you think “logo”.
When you think about this, an image is being created in your mind and it's become a logo.
For example, the iconic apple logo, Twitter bird, and target bullseye.
The iconic apple logo, Twitter bird, and target bullseye, all of these three are best examples of Pictorial marks.
This logo is created in such a manner, even if you just see the color of this logo the picture of the Twitter logo will come to mind.
When you see the apple logo, you will remember mobile, iPad and Macbook.
These logos are made famous like this. And this is possible because of the vision behind this.
“Each of these companies' logos is so emblematic, and each brand so established, that the mark alone is instantly recognizable.”
It means that our brand is so famous, that we don't need to write any name below the logo.
It is recognizable by icon only.
The emblem is such a thing, which makes it recognizable. It carries its own identity.
“A true Brand mark is only an image, because of this, it can be a tricky logo type for new companies, or those without a strong brand recognition, to use.”
It is a tricky logo and there may be a reason behind this.
Apple logo also has a reason behind it.
Twitter's bird logo also has a reason behind it.
There may be some trick and that is why these logos are created.
If you will go in depth, then only you will know the reason why twitter logo has bird, why do they keep something else for logo.
Why is there a bird only?
There are always tricks and reasons, that’s why they keep these logos. And their logos become an icon.
OK!
Let’s go further! “Abstract Logo”
“An abstract mark is a specific type of pictorial logo.”
In the pictorial logo, there are specific things like twitter bird or apple and because of that the brand became famous.
But when we talk about “Abstract Logo”, there is only a shape and nothing else, that is called vector as well.
Licking Pepsi logo, there is a circle around which is divided and in adidas logo, there are only stripes.
It does not carry any meaning.
But it looks good and there is a reason behind this.
In the abstract logo, it recognizes their mark from vector, and that vector is kept as a brand in the market.
Normally we have seen in pictorial logos, a bird and apple is used, same in abstract logo, there is an icon only but it is created with shapes.
There is no meaning of that and it does not have any existence as well.
If it has existence, then it will be considered under pictorial logos.
But in an abstract logo, there is an image or frame and on that logo is being created.
However, instead of being restricted to a picture of something recognizable, abstract logos allow you to create something truly unique to represent your brand.
OK!
Next is Mascots.
“Masters logos are logos that involve an illustrated character.”
It involves characters.
Just for an example, KFC is a very famous brand. OK!
The KFC character is used for the logo. That is vectorization. So it involves character design as well
“Often colorful, sometimes cartoonish and most always fun, the mascot logo is a great way to create your very own brand spokesperson – er, spokes- characters.
That creates a brand to itself. Mascots are a good way to create a logo, we can use a cartoon of the owner of the organization in 3D as a logo.
Their faces become a brand or their company becomes a brand.
After that, it comes “The Combination mark”
A combination mark involves a typography and icon as well.
“A combination mark is a logo consisting of a combined word mark or later mark and pictorial mark, abstract mark or mascot.”
It is a combination of all of these.
Like you can add typography, later mark and pictorial mark, abstract mark or mascot or cartoonish character.
When a logo is being created by mixing all of these then it is called “the combination mark”.
“The picture and text can be laid out side by side, stacked on the top of each other, or integrated together to create an image.”
Means by keeping in the side, or on the top, or combining it and then you create anything unique then you can create a logo like combination mark.
“Some well-known combination marked logos include Doritos, Burger King and Lacoste.”
All these are examples of combination marks. all of you heard about Burger King, It is also an example of a combination mark.
There is an icon in that and a round is created with blue color, Burger King is also written there, so typography or lettermark is also added there.
Like this by mixing many types, a combination is being created and after that this logo is created.
Now Let's see, “The emblem”
Emblem logos are like badges or stamps.
Which companies use these logos most? This is a little bit of a traditional look or traditional feature, in our logo types.
And it also gives a classical look to this.
It is normally used by Govt agencies, school, auto industries.
Because they want to give a thick and unique look that is different from a normal company or stylish company.
For classical look or traditional look, emblem logo type is used.
You heard the name of Starbucks and Harley-Davidson. These company logos do not look old type, what they do, they modernize it as per 21st century.
The Starbucks logo is being used as a stamp.
That is a part of the emblem and it is not considered in watermark or in typeface or in typography or in pictorial logo. It is a little stamp type.
The Harley-Davidson logo is also the same, it is also like an emblem type.
So like this, these logos are created classical and traditional look wise as per 21st century.
We have seen the theoretical part of how many types of logos are there.
We referred to all the types.
Now let's see, how can we use this knowledge into practical life or in practical industry.
Normally what happens, we understand the practical very well but when we start being practical, we create something else.
So we must be aware, what we need to deliver to the client.
First thing, what is the expectation of the client and what kind of question we should ask the client and what brief we should take from the client's mind.
What kind of logo is desired by the client. We have to do the research on what their company does. We have to do R&D. We have to understand their company.
If that company has three or four partners, then we need to do a meeting with all of them and we should take the briefing, so that we will be able to collect their ideas.
If they have any ideas or we can show our own ideas.
Where should we start? That's the biggest question.
Because logo design cannot be started instantly.
First we have to understand the client, their company, their field, their industry and their mind as well.
After understanding all of these, we can proceed further.
We cannot start creating logos instantly in a coreldraw or in any software.
Understanding the types of logo means, we go to the client and we understand that they want an emblem, pictorial or text.
OK! We have to take a briefing like this from a client, so that our future flow chart will get ready. A photo frame will get ready.
And we will start work on that. OK!
If you have any queries or comments, click the discussion button below the video and post there. This way, you will be able to connect to fellow learners and discuss the course. Also, Our Team will try to solve your queries.
Our next topic will be about client briefs.
And the second topic will be practical local design. We will take an example, how we can make a conceptual logo.
Thank you!
