Understanding Conceptual Logo Design in CorelDRAW

In the last lecture, What did we learn?

First thing, we learned in the last lecture how to deal with clients for logo design.

What is a logo design brief?

What kind of information is provided by them?

First thing, supermarkets.

They informed us, they have a supermarket.

Now Supermarkets have a normal audience, mostly ladies who visit supermarkets.

Now it is trending that gents are coming into supermarkets as couples.

Means mostly the general public visit supermarkets including children and old people.

Another thing they informed us that they want a logo in only orange and green color.

When we asked them, do you have any reference in your mind?'' they informed us that they don’t have any reference right now, but give us an option, will let you know later.

So first thing, We have information that we have to make a logo for a supermarket.

Let's see which kind of logo will be created according to their color and theme.

Second major question is, what is the name of the company?

Just for an example. Their company name is “Patel Super Market”. OK!

This is our normal client for an example.

We have created a logo for Patel Super Market.

Now, We did some research about the supermarket.

We practically do the research. As it is written here, SuperMarket Trolley, Grocery, Basket. 

What is the basis of this, let's see.

We check on google. What do we need to write here? First we have to do the research that, what kind of logos are being used for supermarkets.

What kind element, colors and typography used in those logos, we will see that and what is current trend is going on.

We will type in google, supermarket logo design.

We will go to the images section and see the current logo design available in the market.

First, we see this and also check what they did in this logo. They simply used a trolley in this logo as an icon.

Here also you can see that the trolley is used directly as an icon in orange and blue combination.

Then, here is also the same.

They created a trolley by taking a red and orange combination.

Here they showed some grocery items like fruits and all other items.

And trolley created with lining.

Let's see more.

In this logo, they used typography and stretched the letter F, so it looked like a trolley.

Here, this is a simple and minimal logo. Three bags are here and a small supermarket is drawn here like a tent.

Here, through the basket they portrayed the supermarket or a shop and those balls are shown as material or grocery items.

They inserted a pattern inside that and that’s why it is looking beautiful.

Here, they have shown speed in the logo of “Supermercato24”.

By speed they want to give the message that their delivery rate is fast and they are open for 24 Hours.

“Spesone” They tried to show speed and created a logo in red and green. Further, to give the feeling of being online, they inserted an arrow in this logo.

They want to show us that our supermarket is available online also through a website or application.

You have seen types of logos available here and what they portrayed in those logos.

First, supermarket trolleys are portrayed more in logos.

Another thing is grocery. They considered groceries as fruit or balls in their logos.

They have some baskets as well in their logo.

They not only considered trolleys but rather they have shown baskets as well. Also they did some research on the basket as well.

We did this much research. These many things are used in supermarkets.

OK now we will see. How to create a logo?

But I took a normal sheet and wrote PATEL.

We will convert this in uppercase.

First thing, to create a logo they provided us in brief, they want pictorial and typography means combination logo.

We have to look for a thick font. Just like this “Franklin gothic heavy”.

Another one is this, I will find bold font in this also. Let's see one more option.

Let's check another font. Pluto!

We have taken this much point, but this one is looking perfect to me. OK!

Thickness is perfect and all other angles are also perfect.

We will delete others and take this in the center.

We selected the font and we can change this also if it does not match our icon. OK!

Because this is such a thing which may fluctuate according to the situation because the logo will improve gradually till its completion.

Now we will see how to bring a trolley.

Two things we can do. We have a freepik website where there are lots of vectors available for designers.

We can find open files here in which we can change the color, shape and other things.

We open a file just like a designer creates but not a CorelDraw file but we can find an illustrator file.

I will describe this to you. I will normally type supermarket here.

We have this many options here and all of them are free and open files.

So that we can modify it according to our wish.

This one, we liked it. I took this in a new tab. This one is also good. OK!

Now, how will you use this? We have to click on this download and click on the free download.

After clicking on free download, a zip file will be downloaded named shopping cart.

Now, I show you have to recognize a free and premier design.

Those logos which have a crown on them are not the free one.

Logos without a crown are free.

We will download this as well and click on free download.

We received two files here.

We will click on show in the folder.

Here it is. Right click then extract the file and then enter.

And we got the shopping cart supermarket logo template.

Now, Two things! Sometimes, you will have only an EPS file and sometimes you will have an AI file that means Adobe illustrator.

If some have idea of AI files then good and if you don’t know about this then don’t worry, you wont get any issue and I will brief it also, so that you will able to use AI files in CorelDraw.

This is also a Vector Base software.

If you have an EPF file then there is no issue at all.

If you have an AI file then there is also no issue at all. You have to drag this and drop in coreldraw. Click OK!

We received this open file and we will ungroup it and we will delete it's box.

So what did we get? we got a basket which was already created.

We don't need to do anything here. We can use it anywhere or we can fix it anywhere.

Lots of students might be thinking that this is just a theft.

This is your misunderstanding. what happens normally, it is just a normal character.

But if there is a big character then what will we do?

I show you by example, like there is a builder who creates a building, then what he will do?

He will purchase sand, cement, bricks and after that he will create the building.

He will not manufacture the sand, cement and bricks by himself only.

That's wrong! it will consume so much of our time.

His main agenda is to create buildings so that he will purchase everything from the market only.

Same like that, If we have to create any logo and then we create everything by ourselves, Then it will take so much of our time.

Suppose, if we have to create this trolley, Then we have to sketch it then redraw it.

If we're creating any designer post, and if we create this whole post, it will be used as a small part.

Then do you think so , we need to create this whole thing by ourselves only.

No, Rather we can take this from somewhere and we can manipulate this or take inspiration from this and create a logo.

Selecting anything is also creative.

This does not mean that you have to create from scratch.

If you want to do that then it's OK but if you have time then you don’t need to create the whole thing.

You can take it from somewhere and use it, if that is free.

If it is not free then don’t take it forcefully, otherwise you will face copyright issues. OK!

Freepik is such a website, where you will get lots of things for free and we can use small elements in that and we can save our time.

Like here is laptop, coffee cup, specs, Mobile, mouse, rubbers, if we start creating all these things then it will consume lots of time but we can use these small things in our design to enhance creativity.

Now, we got our logo. Let’s come back to our topic.

We will create this line, And we will take our main trolley to the other side. We don't need this as well.

We will take this in a box. Like that! Click on PAGEDOWN.

We have two color options, We can use green and orange.

We can play with both colors and create anything.

We will keep Patel in orange color and background color in black and we have other options as well.

We can white the PATEL and background in orange so that it will be perfectly visible.

Because visibility is really important in any logo or any design.

We will give a rounded shape to this from every side.

Otherwise we can do it from any two parts. That is also possible.

We have written a supermarket at the bottom of this. What we will do? We will write supermarket in any normal or thin font.

We will write SUPERMARKET, We will change its font and reduce the size.

We will align this.

This much part is done! Hope you understood that.

OK!

We have this icon. Question is, where can we place this?

First we have to decide its color. We will adjust this color, and first of all we will convert this in RGB And we will slightly adjust it. OK!

Now we will place this color in this icon. We will feel our color in all of these balls as well.

We created the combination of green and orange.

We can take a grey color ball here. OK!

We took around here only for our alignment.

Now, We can set it in two ways. We can vertically align it.

We will have a supermarket in the center and an icon also in the center. Like this!

Let's create another option.

First, we will take all of this in the center and align it.

You can refine it according to your choice.

We can take concepts from freepik or anywhere but we cannot create the same.

As I told you earlier, we can take sand, cement and bricks but we have to create our building by ourselves only.

So here also needs some modification in creativity by your side.

Then only it will look correct and beautiful as well. OK!

We created this one option! CTRL + C and we will paste it in another page and will try another option in that.

We can keep this cart on the right hand side, like this. OK!

What will we do here? We will extend this patch, so that our cart will be set here.

We keep it like this.

After keeping it here, we have to delete the overlapping part.

OK! Then how will we do that? See, I want to be here only. OK! I want this patch.

We will trim the patch. Trim is done.

Then after, we will nudge 10MM and keep 10 inch above.

Now here the CUT part, double click and their nodes will be opened.

Here, we have to do it very precisely, because if the node gets deleted then the whole shape will be ruined.

We will delete only these nodes only.

Now, It is deleted. Now, what we kept 10 inch above, we will bring it back 10 inch below. It will come to the exact same place.

Now, We can align this SUPERMARKET to P letter. Like that!

We will increase the letter spacing for visual balancing.

It is necessary to do modification for visual balancing.

We should stretch it till where? This is always a question.

Sometimes it sets and sometimes it will not set.

Sometimes you have to take it according to your judgment or sometimes you will get the sign that you have to keep it till here only.

Here we will keep it till the alignment of E.

I take a reference line at the end of E. We will bring it till here perfectly.

You have to do this precisely so that it looks perfect.

So, this “PATEL SUPERMARKET” is done!.

Now another thing, we cut it here but the wheel is as it is.

So in the wheel, I have to do white part in the back of the wheel as well. OK!

What will we do? What if we give white outline to this cart? OK!

The moment you give white line, you will get this kind of shape. It will look like it is perfectly cut from there. OK!

That's completely part of creativity and ideas. These things work on try and error.

Observe as much as the logo you see normally.

As I told you earlier in the past lecture, some people have inbuilt creativity and some people bring creativity by observation.

You can build up creativity by observation.

If you have by birth creativity, then it's good. but creativity in graphic design is totally a different concept.

Creativity in art or creativity in graphic designing both are different things.

Art and designing both are different things.

As I told you earlier, art is for pleasure, where designing is for passing information.

We do design to pass out any information or to represent anything in a better manner.

Graphic designing is a visual communication, then if we have to communicate in this then we need to create our design beautifully.

So you need to observe lots of logos and you have to understand it in depth.

I gave an outline here but that outline is looking thin to me.

We will convert that thinness and thickness.

On double click we will get a pop-up, there is a color and width.

In width, we will take one and there is no effect. Let's take 4 here, the moment you select 4, the green part becomes thinner, as you can see.

All the balls and our wheel become thin. Why? Because they considered it inside, OK! What will we do here?

We will round from the corner, and we will take outside.

After that, as I taught you earlier, We will scale it and we don’t want any difference in the outline. It should be as it is and for that we have to do two tick marks.

“Behind fill and scale with object”

So that if I make this logo bigger but there outline will be as it is. You can see it here, it is slightly done and some part is left here, so we will do it again.

We will make it thicker. We will take 5. OK!

Now that orange part is gone. We got this perfectly.

Let's see it here by flipping it, how does it look? Does not suit.

This is good.

This has become an option.

We can do another thing in this, as we have permission to use green and orange color, So we can replace orange with green and green with orange.

You have to adjust these balls, because of the outline, they are not looking great.

So better remove the outline from here, as we don’t need it here.

Remove the outlines from the balls, right click here an outline will be removed.

I am taking eyedropper from here and putting green in place of orange and where the color is orange there I will put green color.

We will group both of them and I will click P, so that it will come in the center of the page. Like this.

Let's give a box and see how it looks.

This whole logo is created by font or icon. We put some of our creativity here and we took some reference or icon from the internet.

We can create one more option. Let's see further.

In the next lecture we will see complete conceptual logo design.

Now you will get confused, this one was also a conceptual logo and now what is the complete conceptual logo?

Complete conceptual logo means you just have a brief only with you, you won’t take any icon or tool from anywhere like freepik.
