How to Format Shapes

There are a variety of shapes you can create in MS Excel. Some of the most common shapes are:

  • Text Box
  • Line
  • Circle
  • Ellipse
  • Triangle
  • Rectangle
  • Star

Formatting shapes in MS Excel is a way to add some visual interest to your data. It can also help you organize your data in a way that is more meaningful to you. You can format your shapes by changing their color, border, fill pattern and line style.

There are many tools available in MS Excel that can be used to create shapes. These tools are the following:

  • Insert Shapes:
  • Drawing Tools:
  • Shape Tools:
  • Formatting Shapes:
  • Add Text to a Shape

Click the More drop-down arrow in the Shape Styles group on the Format tab. A style drop-down menu will appear. Choose the style you'd want to utilise. The specified style will be applied to the shape.

To format shapes in MS Excel, use the following keyboard shortcuts:

  • Ctrl+1: Change shape to a rectangle
  • Ctrl+2: Change shape to a square
  • Ctrl+3: Change shape to a diamond
  • Ctrl+4: Change shape to a triangle
  • Ctrl+5: Change shape to an arrowhead pointing up
  • Ctrl+6: Change shape to an arrowhead pointing down
  • Ctrl+7: Change shape to an arrowhead pointing left
  • Ctrl+8: Change shape to an arrowhead pointing right
