The most straightforward way to format numbers in MS Excel is to use the Format Cells dialog box. In this dialog box, you can select the number format that you want from the Number tab and then apply it to all cells or a selected range of cells.
The best way to format numbers in Excel depends on the column type. Numbers in text columns should be formatted as text, while numbers in number columns should be formatted as numbers.
Format the cell (or a range of cells) you want to format.
Select Custom from the Number Format pop-up option on the Home tab, under Number.
Select Custom from the Category drop-down menu in the Format Cells dialogue box.
Select the built-in format you just made at the bottom of the Type list.
Click OK.
When you type a number into Excel, it uses the General format as the default number format. The majority of the time, numbers formatted in the General format are shown exactly as you input them.
