The first two digits of an HSN Code establish the Chapter, the headings are at the 4 digit level, the subheadings are at the 6 digit level, and the tariff items are at the 8 digit level.
The following is how it works in the code:
A two-digit HSN number is assigned to each Chapter.
A four-digit HSN code is created from each two-digit HSN number.
These four-digit HSN codes are later subdivided into the six-digit HSN code.
The chapter under HSN codes is indicated by the first two digits (39) The next two digits (08) represent the chapter headers. The sub-headings are indicated by the next two digits (90). The HSN code is universally recognised.
Only the export and import of commodities require HSN numbers with eight digits. In a tax invoice issued under the said rules in respect of supplies made to unregistered persons, a registered person with aggregate sales up to Rs 5 Cr in the preceding FY may not indicate the number of digits of HSN Code.
The HSN code refers to the Harmonised System of Nomenclature. This is a six-digit code that categorises different items.
