The fundamental benefit of Incoterms is the standardised nomenclature that all multinational businesses employ. Specific phrases or acronyms establish clear guidelines for both carriers and purchasers, reducing uncertainty about obligations and cost control.

Incoterms are increasingly being utilised in domestic shipments, replacing the Uniform Commercial Code shipment and delivery terms (UCC 2-319 through UCC 2-324), which are fairly ancient, having been codified in 1962 and having had no updates or adjustments since then.
