Alterations, the chain of custody, document damage, forgery, origin, legitimacy, and other issues that arise when a document is disputed in court could all be considered evidence.

Examine/compare handwritings and signatures with standard (admitted and specimen) writings. To detect and analyse latent writing on documents.

Any material carrying marks, signs, or symbols intended to transmit a message or meaning to someone can be considered a document. A comparison of the document, or features of the document, to a set of known standards is performed during a questioned document assessment (i.e., authentic specimens).
