Network protocols are sets of rules that govern data communication. Protocols are designed to minimize misunderstandings between the communicating parties.
The most common protocols are Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), Internet Protocol (IP), User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Sockets Direct Protocol (SDP). All these protocols have been developed based on IEEE standards such as Ethernet, Token Ring, Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP).
