A wide area network, or WAN, is a computer network that spans a relatively large physical distance. The use of WANs has grown as the internet and the number of computers in an organisation has grown.
The use of WANs is not without limitations. There are two main limitations to using these networks:
- The performance and speed of data communications can be hampered by the distance between computers and other devices on the network.
- Connectivity issues may arise if wireless signals from the wireless networking hardware are blocked from reaching other devices on the network by obstacles such as walls or trees.
