To choose a text object, use the Selection tool and click. To make the text into editable pathways, go to Type > Create Outlines. To move the letters independently, click the Ungroup option in the Properties panel. Drag each letter separately using the Selection tool.
When you convert type to outlines, you don't have to send the fonts with the file when you share it with others. You can also use a gradient to fill the type and create unique effects on individual characters.
So, before sending your artwork to print, remember to outline typefaces. To aid in the creation of a new typeface, some designers sketch out current fonts. Because you can alter the text as a vector object while it's outlined.
