Go to object>pattern>make and select your object. In the swatch window, a pop-up box will inform you that your pattern has been stored as a swatch. Select OK. Your pattern will be edited in the next window.
This is a fantastic tool for making your vector artwork appear more 3D or photorealistic. It works by placing a'mesh' over a closed object, with the mesh's lines meeting at spots where various colour swatches can be applied to generate a vectorized image.
Each new gradient must be made up of two objects: the starting and finishing colour objects, which must be blended separately. A gradient mesh, on the other hand, is a single object within which several colour sections blend into one another to provide the appearance of a blended object.
