To choose the pink cactus shape in the illustration, use the selection tool and click on it. Click on the pink fill square at the top of the Swatches panel to bring it to the front. The panel's last swatch is a motif called "pink cactus." To fill the selected shape with the pattern, click on that swatch.
To launch the Fill dialogue box, go to Edit > Fill. Choose Custom Pattern from the drop-down menu. To access a selection of patterns installed with Photoshop as well as any patterns you've generated earlier, open the Custom Pattern drop-down menu. Select the pattern you want to use.
