The Marquee tool is the most basic and often the most effective of the selecting tools. This tool is used to make geometric shape-based selections. The marquee tool, in particular, allows you to make rectangular and elliptical choices. Simply click and drag the mouse to construct the selection.
In the Photoshop toolbar, select the marquee tool. It's the second from the bottom, just below the move tool. Hold the left mouse key down on the tool and select one of the extra options from the pop-up menu to access the marquee's four alternatives. To switch to the marquee tool, use the M key on your keyboard.
Select the Rectangular Marquee tool from the Tools panel. On the image, drag a rectangular selection. Your selection is represented by the area inside the animated border. Click the Add to selection icon in the options bar or press Shift and drag to choose more.
