There are three different types of 2D characters:

  • Flat Characters - These are the simplest type of 2D character that is made up of a single shape.
  • Modular Characters - Modular characters have different parts that can be combined to create a more complex character design.
  • Complex Characters - Complex characters have many individual parts and pieces that make up their design.

Some of the functions of 2D characters include:

  • To create a more immersive environment
  • To provide a sense of identity and empathy to the audience
  • To help the audience relate to the character

  • The first step in designing a 2D character is to choose a style. The style you choose will depend on the type of game you are designing for.
  • If you are designing for an RPG game, then you will want to create your characters with more detail. You may want to include features like clothing, hair, and skin color.
  • If you are designing for an arcade game or mobile game, then it is best to keep your character simple and focused on the gameplay itself.

To give the design precision and emotion, elements like shape, harmony, proportion, balance, and variation must be blended. Volumes and forms, as well as lines, colours, and lighting, can be employed to convey the character's inner personality.

We will start by drawing a simple circle to represent the head. Then we will draw two lines to represent the eyes and a line for the mouth. Now we can add some hair and clothes, as well as shading, to complete our character.
