WebDriver Architecture is made up of four main components:Selenium IDE, Selenium RC, Selenium Web driver, Selenium GRID.

Because of its simplified architecture, WebDriver is faster than Selenium RC. WebDriver communicates directly with the browser, whereas Selenium RC requires the assistance of the RC Server. Selenium RC's API is more succinct than WebDriver's. Selenium RC does not support HtmlUnit, although WebDriver does.
WebDriver is a user agent introspection and control interface that allows for remote control. It's a platform- and language-agnostic wire protocol that allows out-of-process programmes to remotely control web browser behaviour.
