Four columns and four rows can be found on the keypad. The Raspberry Pi must transmit a pulse to each of the four rows of the keyboard to determine which button is pushed. When a user hits a button on a line that is currently being pushed high, the associated column is also being pulled high.
To interface with the outside world, the Raspberry Pi uses a range of input/output devices based on protocols like HDMI, USB, and Ethernet.
Ordinary numerical keypads are matrix-structured, requiring 4+3 Arduino digital pins for a 4x3 keypad.
