Console, Source Code, Environment/History, and Files are the four panes that come up by default in RStudio. By navigating to View -> Panes -> Pane Layout, you can rearrange them. By going to View and selecting/deselecting tab options shown at the bottom, you can add and remove tabs from panes.
If you're using RStudio, simply change the option "Global Options" --> "Save workspace as. RData on exit" to "Always," and the environment will be saved and loaded automatically the next time you enter the project.
An environment is nothing more than a set of bindings between symbols and objects that serves as a storage location for variables. You create an entry in the global environment when you start R and make an assignment.
You can use the "rm()" command followed by the variable you wish to remove to clean a single variable from the R environment.
