POSIXct keeps track of both the date and the time, as well as the time zone. The time zone that your computer is configured to is the default time zone, which is usually your local time zone. POSIXct keeps track of the date and time in seconds, starting on January 1, 1970.
Use the as. POSIXct() function to convert Date to Numeric format in R, and then use the as. numeric() function to convert it to a numeric value.
The POSIXct function is used when data needs to be converted from a timestamp that is in one timezone, to a timestamp in another timezone. This is usually done when data needs to be analyzed or processed by a computer, which doesn't know the time zone of the data.
