Hello Friends, welcome to Learnvern. So in our last topic we saw what social media is and the types of social media. Along with that we also talked about the number of users in India actively using Facebook, instagram, LinkedIn and other social media platforms. We also looked at what activities are they performing on these platforms and we also analysed the gender wise usage, that is how many males and how many females are making use of these platforms.
Today with this session we are going to start a new module where we will see what facebook profile is. If you are new to facebook, then how will you create a facebook profile and what is a facebook profile?
I'm bringing an example in front of you. This is basically an example of a facebook profile. This is Sheryl Sandberg who is the Chief Operating Officer and she works for Facebook.
If i have to define a facebook profile in a few words then how will i do it?
A facebook profile is a destination where you can share information about yourself. Which means that on a facebook profile who will upload details about yourself, information about yourself.
Along with these you also share your interest, photos, stories, videos, if you are fond of videos then you can upload videos as well.
Also you can mention your current city, your hometown, your profile image and your cover image; these details get published on facebook as your profile, as an individual user.
As I mentioned, a facebook profile is made up of all of these. As you can see here, I have taken the example of the facebook profile of Mark Zuckerberg. He is the founder of Facebook.
The image that you can see on the top in blue - this we call a cover image.
For cover image you can either keep a static photo, or a video or you may also keep a series of photos.
MArk has kept a static photo as his cover image. Now you can see the photo of Mark, this is called a profile picture. For profile picture, an individual usually uploads his or her own picture so that your genuine authentic profile is visible to the audience.
You might also have noticed or observed on facebook - a blue tick. Now what does this blue tick mean????
The blue tick means that this profile has been verified by Facebook and that means this is an authentic profile and any content published in this profile belongs to that person. So if we talk about this example that is visible to you, it means that this is the profile of Mark Zuckerberg himself and this is an authentic profile and that he himself is posting content on his profile.
If you scroll down, below the profile image and cover image, you will be able to see a section like this. On the left side is your introduction like your current designation, as you see here it is Founder and CEO at Facebook. Then is your work organisation. If you have worked with more than 1 company or if you are associated with an NGO you may mention that here as well.
After this you can also add your college details like Mark has added his college details “Studied Computer Science and Psychology at Harvard University”
Then you can also add your city, that is what is your current home city and where do you reside.
You can also add your hometown as Mark has updated here that he belongs to Dobby Ferry, New York.
And he is married to Priscilla Chan, so you can also display your relationship status. However this is completely optional so if you do not wish to mention your relationship status, you may opt not to update any details and hence this won't be displayed in your profile.
Now, if you look at the right side, this is called a status message. In our previous sessions we saw that as per the statistics, a status message is a post format that is considered as the 2nd highest in driving engagement.
So here Mark Zuckerberg has updated a text message, he has updated a text status. This particular space is called a timeline.
Right?
So every user has a unique timeline where you can post and share your status messages, your milestones, your achievements.
If you wish to connect with your friends, Facebook is basically a social media platform. Social media means that you can stay connected with your society, that is your friends and relatives.
So if you wish to send a request to someone or you wish to connect with someone then in Facebook's terminology it is called a “Friend request”.
So you can send a friend request to your known people. And when they upload anything new, may it be a photo or a video then it will get displayed in your newsfeed, in your timeline.
So if you are new to Facebook and if you do not have a facebook profile, then you can create a profile in no time - i mean in less time. So what do you have to do? You have to go to facebook.com. To do so you may open any internet browser like google chrome or mozilla. Then go to the address bar and you need to type facebook.com.
Then you need to click on this Green button which is “Create New Account”
As soon as you click on this button you will see a dialog box like this.
The first thing it will ask you is your “First Name”
As you move on, it will ask you for more details and you need to fill in the required fields with the right information. Like your date of birth, your gender and then towards the end you will see “Sign up”
As soon as you click on it, Facebook will create your profile account.
That is all for today.
