Hello Friends, welcome to LearnVern. So in the last topic we learnt about what is a facebook profile and what all can you update in a facebook profile.
In today’s unit we will see what a facebook page is and how it is different from a facebook profile. Many people get confused between a facebook profile and a facebook page.
But in today’s unit we will address this confusion as facebook profile and a facebook page are 2 separate entities. If you have your own business then do you need to use a facebook profile or a facebook page or should you make use of a third entity of facebook?
We will see these as well.
Along with this, we will cover all the types of facebook pages and also how these facebook pages work.
As you can see here, I have presented an example of a facebook page. This is how a facebook page looks like. You might be aware of this brand “TATA SALT” - Desh ki sehat, desh ka namak.
As we have a cover image on facebook profile similarly we have a cover image on facebook page as well. In profile image you can upload the logo of the brand, or a particular icon and here you can give a tag line or a title to your page. A Facebook page is basically meant for businesses. Along with this, facebook page can be created for entities as well like celebrities, causes, organisations by which they can reach their audiences.
There are no charges to set up a facebook page, it is completely free of cost. Google will index your facebook page and your facebook page can appear on Google’s search results as well.
The example that you can see here is the facebook page of a brand. As we discussed, about 6 categories of facebook pages exist.
The first one is a “Local Business or Place”.
You live in a particular city, like if you live in Bengaluru or if you live in Delhi, and you have a local pizza outlet near your residence or a local shop. If they wish to create a facebook page then they shall be creating a page in category one and that is “Local Business or Place”.
That means they do not have a pan India Network and their business is majorly localised as they do business in that local location only. So for this the most relevant category is local business or place.
Now if you are an institution, a college or a company or a big organisation; you can also create a page on facebook. The category you need to select to create a page is “Company, organisation or institution”
Hope you are following me. Okay?
Now if you are an established brand already; or if you are planning to create a brand; if you are a product manufacturer like shoes or a particular drink or a calculator or you wish to launch a new product in the market then the most relevant category to create a facebook page is a “Brand or Product”
The fourth category we have here is “Artist, Band or Public Figure”. You might have come across the facebook page of a lot of celebrities, like bollywood celebrities, filmstars, cricketers; they all have their facebook page. So any type of influencer or a public figure also can have their page on facebook under the category of “Artist, Band or Public figure”. So if you are an artist ensure that you select this category on Facebook.
Next is the entertainment category. Like MTV, “channel V” and there are so many other entertainment channels, if they wish to create a facebook page then they need to choose the Entertainment category.
Lastly we have a category called cause or community. For example if you are a not for profit organisation or you are a charity organisation or an NGO and if you wish to come to Facebook then you are required to create a facebook page by selecting the cause or community category.
So we saw that as on date we have 6 types of facebook page categories.
Now let us understand one by one in depth with examples as this will enable us to get a clarity on which example belongs to which category.
As you can see, I have shared an example here, this is the page of Maruti Suzuki Arena which is the best car dealer company. You can see their sections like:
Page likes, then
Profile image and
The title of the facebook page
The blue button that you can see here is called the “Call to Action” button. Which means, whenever a visitor or a user visits the facebook page for the first time, then we greet them with Call to action.
The call to action could be anything. “What do we want our user to do”
This is termed as call to action.
Like here, Maruti has ensured that if anyone visits the facebook page for a car, then the user or the visitor needs to click on “Book Now”.
By clicking on “Book Now” you will be diverted to the website of Maruti Suzuki.
On the left you can see the About section. The company has updated its information there. You can see the number of likes, then how many people have checked in here, what is the company’s website, then you can send this facebook page as a message. Then there is a subcategory under the category and the category they have selected under their facebook page is Vehicle Manufacturer.
The next example I would like to share is of the Cause or community Category.
As you can see, Child rights and you. There is a very big well known organisation named “CRY” that works for a particular cause, works for children. This is their facebook page and their category can be clearly seen here, which is Not for profit organisation. They have publicly displayed their ratings as well. So if you enable this option then the ratings will get displayed on the top of the page as you can see here.
In the last example we saw that the call to action in case of Maruti Suzuki was “Book Now”, here in this example, CRY has kept call to action as “Send Message”
Right?
So the team of CRY wishes that you click on this button and initiate a conversation with them. So “Send Message” in this case is the “call to action”.
On the left you can see that CRY has tagged their registered office address. So you can check their office address on Maps.
Then at the bottom are the number of likes and how many people have checked in.
On the right you can see the posts and status that a brand like this can publish too and thus communicate with their audience base.
The next example is of the Artist Influencer category and this page is of Priyanka Chopra and she is one of the famous and leading Actress. If you check her facebook page she has around 55 Million followers. She has kept a tagline as her designation, that is, what does she do. Then this is her cover image, her profile image and you also get to see the Blue tick through which Facebook confirms that this profile is a verified profile.
So we saw 3 examples of Facebook pages.
Now comes the main point and that is the difference between a facebook profile and a facebook page.
When we learnt how to create a profile we saw that we were mentioning details related to an “INDIVIDUAL”.
So the profile represents an individual. Like, I, “Your Name” have an individual profile on Facebook. (Pls speak out your name)
Similarly, if we talk about any business like TATA Consultancy Services or Google, so any business or any big institution will have their page on Facebook.
As I have mentioned here, a Facebook page represents either a Business, Celebrity, NGO. We have already seen examples of these.
But a facebook profile is meant ONLY and ONLY for an individual.
Some people get confused and end up creating a facebook profile for their business which isn't a best practice from the marketing perspective.
If your business is small or you are a startup or you wish to set up a new business then you should also opt for a facebook page.
And if you as an individual wish to create an entity then you should always opt for a facebook profile.
On more important point is that :
A facebook profile can be private as well as public. So you can lock your profile by which people or search engines do not crawl your profile as you do not want your profile to appear in search results.
If you select this privacy setting then your profile will be set as private and thus search engines won't be able to crawl your profile and not only that, your profile won't even get displayed in facebook search results. This comes under the “Privacy” option.
You can also keep your facebook profile as public. In this case, people can discover your facebook profile and can also send a “Friend Request”.
On the other hand if I talk about a facebook page, then the facebook page by default is “Public”
Any user can search for the facebook page, can like and follow the page too, can read the comments and can interact with the page too.
So this is the major difference between a facebook profile and a facebook page.
Now, let us talk about “How to create a facebook page”
There are 5 simple steps to do so.
First of all, you need to go to this url
Facebook.com slash pages slash create
This is your first step
Go to any browser and then type facebook.com slash pages slash create
The second step is that you need to select the page category. We discussed about 6 categories, remember? You need to select either one of them that you feel is the most relevant category for your business.
Then you will be required to fill some mandatory information like
name of the page,
Url of the page,
Address of the page
All the fields that Facebook terms as mandatory, you are required to fill in those details.
Step 4 is very simple, you need to click on “Create Page”
And the last step is where it asks you if you wish to save your cover image and profile image now. If you have a cover image and profile image then you can upload it and click on save.
Now, your facebook page will be ready.
