FAQs

The process of selecting a smaller subset of your data set for viewing or analysis is known as data filtering. Filtering is usually (but not always) temporary; the entire data set is saved, but just a portion of it is used in the calculation.

Filter a set of information:

  • Within the range, select any cell.
  • Select Data > Filter from the drop-down menu.
  • Select the arrow next to the column heading.
  • Select Text Filters or Number Filters, and then a comparison, such as Between, from the drop-down menu.
  • Select OK after entering the filter criteria.

To use the Advanced Filter, follow these steps:

  • In the data table, select a cell.
  • Click Advanced in the Sort & Filter group on the Data tab of the Ribbon.
  • Select Filter the list in-place for Action.
  • Select the data table for the List range.
  • Select C1:C2 – the criteria header and formula cells – for the Criteria range.
  • To see the results, click OK.

To apply a filter to the value of a cell, type:

  • Select a cell that contains the value you wish to filter for by right-clicking it.
  • Select Filter > Filter by Value of Selected Cell.
  • The column will be subjected to the filter.

If you wish to bring back the filter menus with your keyboard, click CTRL + shift + L, and those filter buttons will appear on your top row. If you arrow over to a cell with a filter button, you can bring up the filter menu by pressing ALT + down arrow.
