And, like in the previous topic we saw the first point of “Pursuing Sales Career” i.e. ‘Types of Sales Career Offers’. Where we saw, what are the sales career offers we get.
We had an understanding about the same.
Right! Where we saw that you can enter into face to face communication, you can enter in over the call career and you can enter in chat support too.
So, I hope it is clear in your mind what line you should choose and why?
Right! Now the next topic that we are going to see in ‘Career in Sales' is ‘Fears of Choosing Sales Career'.
Now, I have to choose a sales career. The first thing is fear, there are many fears. What are they? We are going to understand ahead.
And, always remember one thing, if you feel scared before attempting anything, I read it somewhere, it’s not my self made.
If you feel frightened at any point, if I do this, will it turn right or not.
I mean you are trying to take a brave step, of course not talking about any mischief.
If before taking a brave step you are feeling scared, then that fear is legit.
Right! Because the step that you will take afterwards will be full of strength.
And, after that one strong courageous step your way will be clear.
Right! So it’s Ok to have fears.
Right! It is not something which is abnormal.
I had it in my mind, and everyone has it in their mind, whosoever has been a sales expert, all had it in their mind.
So, talking about fears, first comes ‘Educational Background', right.
Whatever education I have done till date, was nowhere associated with sales.
Suppose I am in IT line, what I studied was in science line, I was good at arts, I may be have done a diploma, right.
So, even I have done commerce but in that my finance portion was good, my international business was good, but I have never done sales or marketing.
So, will I be able to do sales? Having this fear is very legit.
Right! So if the first fear is because of educational background, accordingly, sales is specific… it’s a very wide terminology and it’s a very open field.
It can take anyone with it.
Right! There is no specific requirement for sales line that this specific degree is needed or this education background is required.
If you have, well and good, you have it’s theoretical knowledge, studies wise, be it bachelor’s, master’s, it’s a very good thing.
There’s no harm in it, but even if you don’t have, if you have readiness because there are two things in the world; ‘skill’ and ‘will'.
If skill is missing, definitely we can help you in developing the skills, you can be trained on that and, your skills can be developed.
But, if willingness is missing… even if any specific God comes to teach me, but I am not willing to learn, I can’t learn.
So, if you will keep your willingness alive, we can develop the skill.
Right, so education background is one of the fears.
Second is experience, like till date my experience has been, there are many existing people who want to switch.
They see, “I keep sitting here and the salesperson makes a good amount of money”.
Earning is one aspect, but salespersons are very well known in the market, they are very regarded, they are valued .
But, in the backend I support them, and no one knows that.
So, I want to create an identity for myself, I too want to earn good.
What so ever may be the purpose, but which thought comes to mind “I have never experienced the sales line”.
“I am good at backend, I am good at programming, I am good at a specific… machine.
So, this experience that we have till date, this makes us feel a little low.
Can I go somewhere else or not? Because many of the times we go in our comfort zone.
Right! That I have chosen this specific line, so I should be excelling in that line further.
There’s nothing big, nothing wrong and wrong in that too, right.
If you are thinking, I want to go ahead in this line, it’s good. If your are achieving excellence in one specific line there cannot be anything better than that.
But, if this thought, of switching the line ever came to your mind, it means you want to do it.
But why would it hold you back, because you don’t have the slightest experience in that line.
So, basically it’s all about taking one step of faith.
You have taken the first step of faith, then… the road is always open for you. Right.
Then, the third fear that people have in their mind is “Communication Knowledge Gaps”.
Now if seen, all the salespeople, field people are looking at their office, versus you yourself. Right.
Or, I myself.
So, I have very little knowledge with respect to communication, that whom to answer and how?
Like, I have seen many people being resistant, that “no no no I won’t be able to do it like the way you do it”.
But, I can just ask you a question, can you fly an airplane?
Think about it.
Can you fly aeroplane?
Yes, you heard me right…
The answer is no…
I understand it…
But, now just think of it, that there is some human being who is just like us, two eyes, two faces, I mean, like nobody has two faces, right.
Someone with two eyes, two hands, two legs, with same human body structure, there is some human who is flying it.
It means, if one human being can do it, I can also do it.
And, if no human being has done it, why not I, do it for the first time. Right!.
So, always have a positive approach.
If firstly, you have a communication gap, the best thing in the sales line is to copy.
Can copy the way of doing things, but never attempt to copy personality.
Like, if I am the child of some actor or actress, where there is nepotism which is doing rounds in Bollywood, as an example, we often hear about it on Page 3 discussions.
So if I copy my father or mother’s way of acting , it’s Okay. But, if I try to copy their complete personality, I’ll be in comparison and I’ll probably be less visible.
So what’s better than that! You go to any senior person, any team leader, and try to learn their way.
How they answer in specific situations, understand that method.
And, then try to copy it.
Then, this “Communication Knowledge Gap” of yours will shrink.
And, and fourth, but it’s the major problem, “Resistance to change”.
We resist saying “no, I am good wherever I am”.
Many times expectations of the company rises towards the employees, that by now you have been doing so and so work, now along with this you will do sales as well.
So, indirectly people go on cold war strike, that whatever work I was doing now I’ll do less of it.
So, whenever there is resistance, understand you are hampering your own growth.
Right! Whatever work till date you were doing, you were near to excellence, you know how to do it.
Then, what will be the spark in your life, when you won’t try anything new.
And, in the sales line you will always learn something new.
So, this is one of the fears, that “I will resist, I… don’t specifically like this change”.
So, change is the fear, that’s why you resist, that “no I don’t want to change my life”.
And, the fifth and foremost important fear you know is “Fear of Failure and What people will think!”.
In Hindi we have read the phrase, “Sabse Bada Rog Kya Kahenge Log”.
And, that’s how more than half of people's lives go. You can evaluate your life since childhood till today, and I can evaluate mine.
Right! But now, thought enough of what people will think.
Now think yourself too, that what if you succeed, if you perform very well, then what people will think?
What will you think of yourself?
If you think, that you’ll always fail, of course tension will always linger around.
Right. Because who doesn’t have the fear of losing, everyone has.
Who wants to lose? No one.
Who wants to win? Everyone.
So, it’s not necessary that every time victory will be yours.
But a lesson will be learnt, and will get to learn something new.
Right, and we are there to help you, guide you, that how can you better your sales.
Right, so “Fear of Failure and What people will think”, is the biggest fear.
This is probably the biggest fear amongst all the four fears discussed before.
But, having this fear is justifiable.
But, we won’t let this fear take hold of us.
