The Processor, Power Supply, Input/Output Modules, and a Programming Device are the hardware components of a PLC. – The PLC modules receive DC power from the AC mains-connected Power Supply, but field devices do not. – Digital or analogue field devices are connected to the input/output modules.
PLC input cards rarely provide power, which means that the inputs and sensors require external power. Output modules, like input modules, rarely provide power and instead serve as switches.
