To connect your image/renderlayer node to the Viewer as well as your Composite, press shift-A and create a Viewer node. Tick the 'Backdrop' option in the bottom header, as you have, and the picture should appear in the node editor's background.

Now you may navigate to the appropriate and pick File > Append from your new file. After that, place the mix file in the NodeGroup folder. Append the desired node group after selecting it.
