Introduction. Accessors are used in Java to get the value of a private field and mutators are used to set the value of a private field. Accessors are also referred to as getters, and mutators are referred to as setters.

A mutator method is a mechanism used in computer science to regulate changes to a variable. They are also commonly referred to as setter methods. A setter is sometimes accompanied with a getter (also known as an accessor), which returns the value of the private member variable.
