Accounts (offering "explanations for a negative event to avoid disapproval"), excuses (denying "responsibility for poor outcomes"), and opinion conformity ("speaking or behaving in ways congruent with the target") are only a few of the impression management activities.
For example, a girl who only tells her parents pleasant things about her boyfriend may be attempting to portray him as a wonderful catch in order to keep them together. If a lady spends hours deciding what to dress to a party, she may be attempting to show herself as attractive and fashionable while hunting for a partner.
Self-awareness. One of the essential criteria of impression management is self-awareness.
Be respectful and dignified.
Be considerate.
Do not be afraid.
Maintain emotional control.
Stay upbeat.
The self-concept, desired and undesired identity images, role restrictions, target's values, and existing social image all appear to influence the kind of impressions people aim to create.
While it is nearly difficult to influence another person's view, impression management allows us to portray ourselves in a way that is more likely to elicit a favourable response from others. As crucial as image management is, this is not the time to make any misleading statements.
