The worksheet indicated by num = xlsread(filename, sheet) is read. num = xlsread(filename, xlRange) reads the first worksheet in the workbook from the supplied range. Use range syntax in Excel, such as 'A1:C3'. num = xlsread(filename, sheet, xlRange) reads the worksheet and range supplied.
The workspace variables are stored in MAT-files, which are binary MATLAB files. There are various successive versions of MAT-files that support an increasing variety of capabilities, starting with MAT-file Version 4. All MAT-file versions are supported by MATLAB releases R2006b and beyond.
Alternatively, in the Current Folder browser, right-click the file's name and select Import Data. Then choose the file you'd like to import. Set the importing choices in the Import Tool box before clicking Import Selection to import the data into MATLAB.
