The tonnage of an air conditioner determines its capacity, or cooling capabilities. Split air conditioners, on the other hand, are positioned high and designed to chill bigger spaces, whereas window air conditioners are ideal for air circulation in smaller spaces. Furthermore, split air conditioners with a high tonnage, greater than 2 tonnes, are available.

Cooling (chilled water) is created in a chiller at one central place and supplied to air-handling units or fan-coil units throughout the building spaces. Secondary media are used to chill the air.

Room air conditioners are inefficient compared to central air conditioners. Furthermore, they are out of the way, silent, and simple to use. Even if your air conditioner is only ten years old, replacing it with a newer, more efficient unit will save you 20% to 40% on cooling energy expenditures.

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are referred to as HVAC, whilst air conditioning is simply referred to as AC.
