Dropdowns are toggleable contextual overlays that display lists of links and other information. The supplied Bootstrap dropdown JavaScript plugin makes them interactive. They're toggled by clicking, not by hovering; this is an intentional design decision.
A split button is a cross between a button and a menu in that it gathers similar instructions into a dropdown but also provides one-click access to a default choice without opening the menu.
