Because you should always treat user information as "hostile" when accepting it, you MUST employ server side validation (ssv). If that data is also sent into a database, ssv is your last line of security because you don't want any garbage or invalid data in there.
When you enter data, the browser and/or web server will verify that it is in the correct format and falls within the application's limits. Client-side validation is carried out in the browser, whereas server-side validation is carried out on the server.
